Modeling of road traffic

Abstract:
During the past four decades, computer simulation in traffic analysis has developed into a widely used technology in the research and development of traffic systems. Various simulation analyses and experiments have been carried out in this area. Scientists were successful in incorporating phase transitions into traffic models. New ideas, like cellular automata have also proven their strength. In this talk, I shall discuss a stochastic discrete automaton model to simulate freeway traffic. Monte-Carlo simulations of the model show a transition from laminar traffic flow to start-stop waves with increasing vehicle density.
